Larry has been the head coach of the women’s basketball program since 2010. Taking over a program that had been without a winning season for 13 years, Larry has increased the team’s win total in each of his seasons, including a school-record 19 wins in 2012-13. The Lady Falcons won the Shenandoah-Chesapeake regular season conference title in 2012 and were the overall conference champions in 2013. In 2013, they also traveled to West Virginia and won the ABC Invitational postseason tournament.
Prior to coming to Davis, Larry coached at the high school level for four years and has a similar story. Taking over a program that had never had a winning season in its existence, Larry compiled a 86-16 record in those four seasons, winning 3 conference titles and a state championship.
More important than wins and championships, Coach Ellis strives to create an atmosphere of skill development not only in basketball, but in relationships and “real life”. The Davis College mission states in part that the school is training students to “impact the world for Jesus Christ by the fostering of Christian character and the equipping of students with the knowledge, competencies, and skills needed in an ever-changing world for service and leadership…”. That is Larry’s mission for the team as well. In addition, “I want the players to really enjoy the experience, and look back on their college years and view playing in this basketball program as the highlight of their college life.”
Larry is also the Director of Finance at Davis College. He and his wife, Paula, have 3 children: Brian, Brad, and Cindy.
