10/20/09 TOWN OF UNION, NY -- Davis College men's soccer fell to visiting Lancaster Bible College 3-0 Tuesday in the Falcons' final scheduled match of the regular season.

Davis (7-7, 3-2) cannot finish the season below fourth place in the six-team NCCAA East Region, coach Tom O'Connor said. The region's top four teams are set to begin a single-elimination tournament next week. The winner advances to the NCCAA national tournament.

Lancaster Bible scored all of its goals in the second half. Grant Lockard capitalized on a misplay by a Falcons defender five minutes into the half and scored unassisted from 18 yards out.

"That just kind of took the wind out of our sails," O'Connor said. "We didn't play a 90-minute game. We just couldn't find the net and they just wore us down."

Lancaster Bible scored its final two goals in the last seven minutes of the match.

The playoff seeding should be finalized Thursday, when the rest of the league's schedule is to be completed. Davis had a match scheduled for Saturday that has been cancelled because Bryn Athen cannot field enough players.

10/8/09 ROCHESTER, NY -- Colton Gregg capitalized on a defense lapse Wednesday to score unassisted in Roberts Wesleyan's 1-0 men's soccer victory over visiting Davis College.

A Davis College defender misplayed a through pass, which allowed Gregg to collect the ball in the 21st minute and beat Falcons goalie Nate Benner, who made 11 saves.

Ryan Sanford had 17 saves for Roberts Wesleyan.

Coach's Summary: In one of the best fought matches of the season, Davis traveled to Roberts Wesleyan with hopes of avenging an early season loss which they were beaten by Roberts 2-1. In a battle of skilled soccer teams, Roberts was able to punch in a goal early for a 1-0 lead at half-time. A goal by Hickernell pulled the Falcons (4-4) even with their guest from Pottersville, and it was a 4-2 Davis College lead at the midway point.

9/24/09 WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- Coach's Summary: The Falcons absorbed a 3-0 loss to a very powerful and talented Penn College of Technology team. In what has become all too familiar, the Falcons seemed to come out flat in the first half and in a combination of weak offense and defensive mindset, trailed 3-0 at half time. Once again a half time reminder of how the Falcons are expected to play every game, every half, they responded and came out and shut Penn College down with no goals allowed the second half. Although the Falcons were shut out themselves, the second half the Falcons out-shot Penn College 8-2.

9/22/09 BRYN ATHYN, PA -- Coach's Summary: The Falcons picked up their third victory of the season in a 5-1 victory over Bryn Athyn College. First goal of the game was scored by Josh Allen on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. It stayed that way until 30 seconds left in the first half and Bryn Athyn scored a goal to make it 1-1. After a spirited half time conversation between coaches and players, Davis came back out focused and ready to play a complete second half. Falcons came out and dominated scoring four goals, one more by Josh Allen, two by George Brewer (who now leads the team with his sixth and seventh goals of the season), and senior Evan Hickernell scored his sixth. Overall effort by both the defense and the offense allowed the Falcons to complete the game in a positive team effort. Goalie Nate Benner had another great outing along with the defense -- Buddy Meier, James Head, Antonio Goodridge and Cannon Mentzer.

9/18/09 TOWN OF UNION - The Philadelphia Biblical University men's soccer team scored three first-half goals, including two off corner kicks, en route to a 3-0 win Friday at Davis College. The Falcons (2-3) regrouped to outshoot Philadelphia 8-1 in the second half.

Goalie Saves: Andy Ecker (P) 22; Nate Benner (D) 20.

Shots-corners: Philadelphia 23-4; Davis 22-5.

Records: Davis 2-3; Philadelphia 6-1.

Coach's Summary: "The Falcons played perennial power PBU in a hard-fought well-played game, coming up short 0-3. PBU's three goals, all coming in the first half, were scored via set plays: two corners and one free kick. What seems to be dooming the Falcons by allowing scores on such plays to put them in a hole. They regrouped at half-time and played aggressive defense in shutting out PBU and offensively outshot PBU 9-2. Although the damage had been done in the first half by the lack of defensive marking, it was a positive outcome in that the Falcons competed at a high level for the final 45 minutes. Defender James Head had a tremendous game along with his fellow defenders Cannon Mentzer, Buddy Meier and Antonio Goodridge. Offensive surge in shots was led in a team effort of good passing and hustle. Josh Allen and Brad Zembower along with Justin Race began to dominate the midfield with the rest of the offensive team. They put some great scoring opportunities together but came up just short due to a great effort by PBU goalie Andy Ecker."

9/16/09 TOWN OF UNION -- Though more than doubling Roberts Wesleyan's shot output, host Davis Colleg dropped a 2-1 men's soccer game Wednesday.

Mark Vandenbout converted Justin McClue's corner kick for a goal and 2-0 Roberts Wesleyan lead 10 minutes into the second half.

Evan Hickernell took a feed from George Brewer and scored on what Davis coach Tom O'Connor described as "almost a bicycle kick" from 18 yards out with four minutes to play.

The Falcons (2-2) will host Philadelphia Biblical University at 4 PM Friday at the former IBM Country Club.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN 2, DAVIS 1

Roberts Wesleyan goals-assists: Hayden Hoebeke 1-0; Mark Vandenbout 1-0; Justin McClure 0-1.

Davis Collage g-a: Evan Hickernell 1-0; George Brewer 0-1.

Goalie saves: Ryan Sanford (RW) 16; Nate Benner (D) 6.

Shots-corners: RW 8-4; Davis 17-2.

Coach's Summary: "In another very close hard-fought battle, the Falcons came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Roberts Wesleyan JV team. Roberts led 1-0 at half-time in a very fast-paced defensive battle. Davis's defense once again was very stingy in giving up two goals both on set plays off a direct kick and a corner kick. The Falcons had some great opportunities but Roberts' defense was just as strong. Evan Hickernell broke the drought for Davis in a beautiful pass from George Brewer to make the score 2-1 with four minutes to go in the game. The Falcons offense put together four great opportunities in the final minutes but could not get the game-tying goal. Hickernell and Brewer lead the Falcons with five goals apiece.

Davis College Rolls to Win

9/12/09 TOWN OF UNION -- George Brewer and Evan Hickernell each scored three goals Saturday to lead Davis College to a 6-1 non-league victory over visiting Word of Life Bible Institute.

Coach's Summary: "We had a tremendous first half of ball control and taking advantage of scoring opportunities with senior Evan Hickernell getting the hat trick (3 goals scored) all within the first 45 minutes of play. With a 4-0 lead at half time and Hickernell with a mild ankle sprain, freshman George Brewer picked up the slack and had a hat-trick of his own and now leads the team with five goals scored for the season. Sophomore mid-fielder Josh Allen and freshman mid-fielder Brad Zembower had great games directing the offense and playing tough defense. Davis College defense led by junior Cannon Mentzer and sophomores James Head and Antonio Goodridge along with junior stopper Buddy Meier came up just short of two shut-outs in a row when WOLBI was awarded a penalty kick with 15 minutes left in the game. Goalie Nate Benner (junior) had another stellar performance allowing just one goal. Also freshman Derrek Ledbetter led the team with two assists."

9/11/09 TOWN OF UNION -- George Brewer's two goals led the Davis College men's soccer team to its first victory of the season Friday, 3-0, over visiting Patrick Henry College of Purcellville, VA. Brewer had an assist on the match's opening score, a 15-yard shot from Josh Allen four minutes into the first half. Brewer put the Falcons (1-1) ahead 2-0 at the 29-minutes mark in the second half, and scored again 15 minutes later.

Coach's Summary: "In a real hard-fought battle with Patrick Henry, the Falcons were able to win their first game of the year. Success was achieved in both offense and defense. Offensively in the first half Davis College dominated in ball control led by sophomore Josh Allen and freshman Brad Zembower in their distribution of the ball to an array of players. Josh Allen opened the scoring on a nice assist from freshman George Brewer. The score was 1-0 at the half. Second half the Falcons came out re-focused and were able to take advantage of some great opportunities. Brewer scored the second goal of the game on a nice assist from freshman Justin Race to make it 2-0. Late in the game freshman Derek Ledbetter fed Brewer on a nice cross; Brewer converted to make it 3-0. Defensively Davis stood strong throughout the game posting their first shut-out of the season. Junior goalie Nate Benner turned in a very solid outing."

Patrick Henry 0 0 -- 0 Davis 1 2 -- 3

Davis goals-assists: Josh Allen 1-0; George Brewer 2-1; Derek Ledbetter 0-1; Justin Race 0-1

Goalie saves: Evan Mantel (PH) 16; Nate Benner (D) 5.

9/8/09 HOUGHTON, NY -- A late rally came up short for visiting Davis College in its season-opening 2-1 men's soccer loss to Houghton College's JV team on Tuesday. Evan Hickernell scored with 15 minutes left to cut Houghton's lead to 2-1, but the Falcons could not get the equalizer despite constant pressure in the Houghton zone.

"We had several good chances in the last 10 minutes," Davis coach Tom O'Connor said. "I was very pleased with our effort for not being on the field yet this season."

Coach's Summary: "Even in a losing effort the Falcons showed an aggressive style both offensively and defensively in the 2-1 loss to Houghton College. Houghton is a known soccer power and even though this was the JV team, they were big, fast and strong just as we expected them to be. The game was 1-1 until ten minutes left, and Houghton was able to punch in another score. The Falcons with one less shot on goal than Houghton had many opportunities to die or win the game. Overall for the first game of the year it was a great effort."

Dan Piexoto and Wesley Dean had goals for Houghton.

Davis College hosts Patrick Henry College in its home opener at 5 p.m. Friday at the former IBM Country Club.
