The Davis College Falcons basketball teams organized a fundraiser to benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. Over $600 was raised and will be sent to Samaritan's Purse.

The Help for Haiti Games took place Saturday, January 23, 2010. Both men and women will competed against Valley Forge Christian College of Phoenixville, PA. Donations were accepted during the games held in Robb Activity Center on the campus at 400 Riverside Drive, Johnson City, New York.

In addition to donations, all proceeds from ticket sales were given to this cause. The funds are being sent to Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to victims of war, poverty, natural disaster, and disease. Davis College hosted a disaster relief team from Samaritan’s Purse as they helped people in the Binghamton region affected by the devastating flooding of 2006.

Tom O’Connor, Athletic Director, said, “Christian athletics is about being competitive on the athletic field, but also about being aware of the needs of people and helping where we can. Our students brought this idea to our department out of a deep concern for the tragedy that has taken place. We hope our efforts will help those affected.” O’Connor thanked the students, faculty, staff and community friends for their support of this effort.

Samaritan's Feet Fundraiser Friday, 1.22.10

Davis College Falcons Basketball Coach Dan Rathmell challenged the student body to get involved in a fundraiser, in addition to the "Help for Haiti" games that took place on January 23rd. His challenge? "Come to Friday night's 6 PM game and see Coach Schreiber and I coaching barefoot."

The challenge involved coaches from all levels working to raise awareness of children in need of shoes. The organization, Samaritan's Feet, came up with the idea and started an outreach to supply children with shoes and the Word of God. Currently there are 300 million children that wake up every day that do not own a pair of shoes to protect their feet. When Samaritan's Feet delivers to these children around the world, including children in Haiti, they not only give them the shoes but they wash their feet, put shoes on them, and share the gospel with children on an individual basis. Samaritan's Feet has come up with a goal to supply 10 million shoes to 10 million kids in the next ten years.

There are several ways people can contribute to this effort. One of the most important ways is by spreading the word of this need, and by showing up to support Samaritan's Feet. Another way was for fans to purchase a pair of new children's shoes and bring them to the game on Friday night in Robb Activity Center at 7 PM. Over 50 pair of shoes were collected through the effort. Coach Dan Rathmell will drop them off at one of the several drop houses.

You can also get involved via text message. Simply text "shoes" to 85944 and a $5 donation will be charged on your next monthly cell phone bill.

Note: Samaritan's Feet is not affiliated with Samaritan's Purse.
