- Day of Prayer and Care -

Monday, January 18th, 2010:

Davis College students are prepared to serve others through their studies at Greater Binghamton’s accredited college of Bible and ministry. On Monday, January 18th, students had the opportunity to serve our community  by participating in events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Davis College students volunteered at the Discovery Center and the Salvation Army Monday afternoon. Early evening they participated in the Martin Luther King Day march in Binghamton. After the March, Davis students ushered, set up and served refreshments, and cleaned up after the service at the First Congregational Church in Binghamton. A group of Davis College students led by Leroy Blair and Candace Thornton led music at the service which included speeches by area religious and civic leaders.

Director of Campus Life, Nichole Post, says, “Monday our campus gathered together for a morning of prayer during which our faculty, staff and students prayed for our campus, community, nation and world. The community service days, one per semester, are designed to help students show they care about our local community, and to apply what they learn in the college classroom. As a college of ministry, participating in a community service day is our way of encouraging students to reach out and help others. We were pleased to partner with other organizations in our community to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

September 11, 2009:

Today, as our nation remembers those lost on 9/11/2001, the campus of Davis College is involved with the "Day of Prayer and Care".

Traditionally at Davis College a morning has been set aside each semester for prayer. In recent years (under the leadership of Mrs. Nichole Post, Director of Campus Life) the day of prayer has been combined with the local "Day of Caring" to help community organizations, human service agencies, and churches in Greater Binghamton.

Today students began the morning with chapel, followed by prayer groups spread out around the campus.

On a personal note, it was encouraging to step outside my office building (running to take more photos) and find a group of our students gathered. They were praying for me and my co-workers by name. As I made my way past that group, I saw others stationed at every building in sight doing the same thing -- praying for the campus and our community. The morning of prayer ended on our beautiful Knoll. Students, faculty and staff spread out in a large circle and spent time together in prayer (bottom photo).

Davis College students are spending the afternoon helping at four locations in Broome County (Binghamton YMCA, Greater Binghamton Health Center, Mental Health Association, and the Riverside Drive Cemetery).

Monday we return to regular classes, but today has been a unique blessing that is a part of the Davis College academic experience. Thanks to all those who helped make the Day of Prayer and Care a success!

Side Commentary: If you have never seen the Knoll on our campus, you should. The willow trees and tall pines fill the background like sentinels overlooking the river, and I wondered how many other "Prayer Days" the trees have silently observed for over a hundred years in this same spot.

Spring 2009:

Campus Morning of Prayer to Take Place on January 29, 2009

Since its founding in 1900, Davis College has made prayer a priority in the training of men and women for service to Jesus Christ. Each semester one day has been set aside for prayer. In Fall 2007 and 2008, our Day of Prayer was designed to coincide with the community Day of Caring (see story below).

On Thursday, January 29, 2009, our Spring Day of Prayer will take place. Morning classes will be cancelled and the College will gather together in prayer for our campus, community, nation and world.

Friends and alumni are invited to join for the morning of prayer. If you are local and would like to participate with us in person, the day will begin at 8:30 AM in Lowe Hall. A complete schedule will be posted here shortly.

Fall 2008:

Davis College Students Participated in Day of Prayer and Caring on September 11, 2008

Davis College students, faculty and staff participated in the annual local “Day of Caring” on September 11, 2008.

Historically Davis College has set aside one day each semester for prayer. Classes were cancelled on September 11, 2008 and the campus community came together to pray for persona, campus, local, national and international concerns during the morning. In the afternoon, the campus headed out to support organizations directly impacting the lives of people including churches, schools, and community agencies.

"The campus Day of Prayer combined with the local Day of Caring reinforces the mission of our college to train men and women to assist people in a culturally-relevant manner," said Nichole Post, Director of Campus Life. "Through this outreach students gained hands-on experience working with local leaders meeting the needs of individuals in Greater Binghamton. Whether they were painting a church, reading books to children at a child-care center, or serving lunch at a community food program, Davis College students were there to make a difference."

Andrew Livermore is a sophomore from Elmira, New York in the Youth Ministry concentration. “I love serving people and liked being involved in the Day of Caring last year. Serving dinner gave me the chance to get to know people and just talk or listen to their needs. The Day of Caring is a small way to be faithful where God places you to serve Him.”
