On Monday, January 16, 2006,
over fifty members from the campus of Davis College
participated in community events celebrating the life and
visionary leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Davis students, faculty, and
staff volunteered to help with arts and crafts and a
scavenger hunt at the Discovery Center. Another group
assisted with parade preparations at Boscov's, while other
students attended the ceremony and performances at
Binghamton City
Hall. In the evening, Davis students marched in the Martin
Luther King Day parade, and then helped usher, serve
refreshments, and clean up at the church service. A faculty
member and two students sang in the Community Choir.
Davis College's coordinator for
the event was Mrs. Alicia D. Dixon-Garrard, Associate Dean
of Student Life. "All of the other representatives from
community organizations that I talked to loved our students.
They found our students helpful, devoted, and lots of fun.
Mrs. Jones, coordinator of the evening worship and wife of
Pastor Jones, the Interim Chairman of the Martin Luther King
Commission, said that she could not have pulled off the day
without us. I believe the community was pleasantly, and
thankfully, surprised at our participation. And now, more
community churches have noticed that we're here." Mrs.
Dixon-Garrard also noted that a diverse representation of
the Davis College student body was involved in these
community events.
Davis College, Greater
Binghamton's only faith-based higher education institution,
intentionally strives to be an example of multicultural
unity and representative of our society's cultural, ethnic,
and racial diversity. As a result of this commitment, campus
diversity has grown. In Spring 2006, 31% of the incoming
freshmen came from multicultural backgrounds and foreign
countries. |
