Rediscovering the City Center by William Whyte

z
Some of my engineering background surfaced when I read a review of Rediscovering the city center. Of course my thoughts always lean toward Davis College and how we can go about making this a better place. One thing the campus lacks is a center. A community place, the highest trafficked place, a place where students, faculty, and staff naturally congregate. Where is that? Where should, could that be?
Whyte has an interesting section comparing the inner city, the busiest place in the city, with the ancient Greek agora: the market. But it was more, small business of all kinds, meeting places, "coffee" shops, exciting, crowded, dynamic.
Davis College needs such a place. Where should it be?

My campus also lacks a center. I would really love having a nice center.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've been spending some of my time looking at the processes of certain areas at Davis and wonder where the unity lies. I'm not a huge unitific person having taken the whole humble thing into another playing field. I sometimes wish the school would allow VOLUTEERISTIC opportunities instead of mandatory opportunities when it comes to things like day of care. Making things mandatory makes me not want to do it just because it's Davis forcing students to or else get fined.

Very cool. I would hope that Davis would listen to people such as yourself, bright young enterprising individuals, unfortunately I worry it's all a huge bureaucracy.

I study architecture and its important to realize that mandating a specific place to be a 'community hub' can be a bit tricky. Just because you build it doesn't mean that they will come.

You need to study how people already use space and where they currently gather. Where to the most circulation paths cross? That's usually the best spot.

A Community Place is like a market place. These cannot be created, unless all the players feel the need for it. Maybe that is what people at Davis need to work on as the first step. The community place will follow.

I hope a sense of place and community can be created at Davis. I recently moved from a suburban area to a small city neighborhood with a vibrant city center within walking distance. What a difference it makes in quality of life! I know all my neighbors and I see them frequently in downtown gathering places, at events, etc... This really needs to be a focus for institutions like Davis and communities in general

Thanks for the post. You don't need much to make something a center of activity, just provide some comfortable space where students will love to hang out with each other. It's the people that make the place awesome, usually not the place itself.

Must agree with you, business is the lifeblood of communities in many ways. The marketplace is a joy to be a part of. Every month or so I organise a car boot sale where me and my friends can sell our unwanted items we consider as junk that other people treasure. Strange world.

A central focal point for socializing is important. Such a place should not have too much background noise so people can hear each other and have good conversations. I personally enjoy coffee shops, cafes, book stores with wireless internet and good seating where lounging is allowed and people can interact in comfort.

Some colleges and universities have student centers for the sole purpose of being a place where students can congregate and hang out in a relatively safe, central location.
