Worshipping Idols

In the pre-exilic biblical texts the number one issue addressed was Israel's turning to idols and other gods. Should we not be similarly concerned? What are today's other other gods?, idols? So here are some thoughts:

(1) more subtle today--not overt idols nor gods, though true in some parts of the world Allah is such a threat to Christianity.

(2) watching TV commercials at Matthew's house over break--remember Kate and I do not have a television--continued to prove to me that sex is goddess in the good old usa.

(3) the house finance disaster shows greed and the consumerist "want now" philosophy must be John's second beast.

(4) perhaps fundamentalist and evangelical Christianity's overemphasis on going to church as our number one duty to God illustrates our lack of compassion toward our neighbors.

(5) technology, cell phones, computers, video games--gods every one of them

(6) a passion for sports that consumes life, sorry lot that

I think that idols are only as subtle as you are in the culture and in or out of touch with God. So the old things have taken more abrasive form, more invasive, more personal by being on my TV in my living room than me even having to leave my room to bear witness to sins. Because I want any type of sin, I can have it and access it at my finger tips... and I am told thats OK. I like the summary of "duty to God" it should be love over attendance. Ouch, you cut my heart with (5)... always gods? If so, I will argue, passionately, for tools. Either that or the gods have their place in Godly life. You pick.Sports, yes, dangerous field. I like them, competition is seductive in its own way. One must know oneself to be able to label anything as a discipline. What are your gods?

Idols are all arround us...especially in our churches. Every time we figure out who God is, we have made a graven image. Yes, even God can become an idol (perhaps the most dangerous). Perhaps I am just restating number 4.
