Post details: Elegant Universe by Brian Greene

Elegant Universe by Brian Greene

a

Greene writes superbly, highly technical vocabulary and concepts become understandable as his simply stated arguments describe Einstein and quantum mechanics cojoined by string theory. Macro and micro physics have merged in ways previously, even recently, unimagined. The reader's attention lies in Greene's hands as he works back in time, space, and temperature to the instant of the big bang, a mere 15 billion years ago. But then the mathematics, physics end being replaced by speculative cosmology and the scientists hope of better observations, data, calculations that would yield theory currently unexplainable.

Here are some words to ponder, "In plain language, things are the way they are in our universe because if they weren't, we wouldn't be here to notice." That is, perhaps no matter how physicists proceed, the answer to the question how did it all begin?, lies beyond our ability to discern. I guess one could say that is god, but then physicists don't include one in their calculations. I guess the world-view proponents propose such an exercise as christian math, but I don't get that point.

More christians should read Greene to better understand the platform from which science operates, its strengths and weaknesses. This is hardly a idle occupation.

Yay, you finished it! I mentioned to my grandfather on Christmas day that I had revisited his book this past semester, and we started making jokes about strings and things.

Even though I probably don't understand everything he was speaking of, Greene has inspired me to pursue a better understanding of physics! It really is a beautiful science... I think I'll email my friend who's a physics major in the RAF and ask for his one paper again on the theory of relativity, and commentary.

You know that whole theory of infinite regress of universes, ended by some point of singularity? I wonder how we can factor God in as that point of singularity/unity/wholeness-oneness. Yikes, factor God... heresy?

Do you think reading science matters in regard to one's faith and conception of God?
