Creative Arts Courses
WORS 1022
Creative Arts Seminar (1 credit)
This course
will explore the role of creative arts in worship and
ministry. Guest lecturers and demonstrations will introduce
the student to the diversity of disciplines that comprise
the creative arts, including music, worship leading, drama,
dance, and arts technology.
WORS 2011 Christianity, the Arts and Truth (3
credits)
This course
explores the Biblical role of the arts in worship and
ministry. After examining the nature of worship, this course
will focus on specific scriptural principles and practices
in regard to music, drama, and the visual arts. Students
will develop a Biblical philosophy of art that will provide
a foundation for the use of the arts in worship and
ministry.
WORS 2022
Current Trends in Worship (3 credits)
This course
will investigate current approaches to worship. Students
will explore a variety of types of worship services,
including traditional, contemporary, and blended. Videos and
opportunities to observe diverse worship services will
broaden student awareness of current trends.

MUSC 1211
Beginner Guitar Class (1 credit)
This course
will introduce the beginner, in a group setting, to a
variety of chords and techniques that can be effectively
used to accompany group singing. Repertoire will consist of
hymns and praise choruses.

Applied Piano (1 credit)
This course
is designed to help the student, through private
individualized instruction, develop the skills and
competencies necessary to play music in an ever-changing
worship environment. The flexibility of this course allows
intermediate and advanced students to focus on one or more
of the following areas: congregational hymn playing,
contemporary keyboard improvisation, sacred solo repertoire,
and/or classical music. Beginners will be introduced to the
fundamentals of reading music and playing for personal
enrichment.

Applied Guitar (1 credit)
This course
is designed to help the student, through private and
individualized instruction, develop the skills and
competencies necessary for the sacred guitarist to perform
music in an ever-changing worship environment. Students may
opt to study classical music to develop technical
proficiency and interpretive skills that will transfer to
the performance of traditional and contemporary church
music. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of
guitar with the goal of progressing to the extent that they
will be able to serve in local church and church related
settings.

Worship Team Ensemble (1 credit)
Through
preparing for and leading music in chapel, this course will
provide the student with valuable experience in preparation
for local church and church related ministry. Students
selected to participate on the worship will learn to work
together as a group, gain experience in regard to the
rehearsal process, and develop worship leading skills. The
ensemble will meet once each week to prepare for chapel.

Music Theory I (3 credits)
This course
provides a review and further instruction in the concepts
covered in Fundamentals of Music. In addition to the
concepts covered in Fundamentals of Music, students will
study secondary triads, seventh chords, applied dominants,
and modulation. Students will develop musicianship through
singing melodies and chanting rhythm patterns using tonal
and rhythm syllables.
MUSC 2233
Music Theory II (3 credits)
A
continuation of Music Theory I, this course provides
opportunities for more in-depth harmonic analysis. this
course also provides instruction in traditional four-part
writing procedures. Students will develop musicianship
through singing melodies and chanting rhythm patterns using
tonal and rhythm syllables.

Computer Applications in Music and Worship (1 credit)
This course
will provide the student with computer skills necessary for
local church ministry in music and worship. Students will
gain knowledge and experience using notation and sequencing
software. Students will also learn to use software for
projecting lyrics.
MUSC 3291
Songwriting (2 credits)
This course
provides instruction in how to compose contemporary songs
and choruses appropriate for congregational worship.
Opportunities for student compositions to be performed and
critiqued are important aspects of the course.
Drama
Courses
DRAM 3022
Writing Drama (3 credits)
A study of
the principles and techniques of effective writing designed
to prepare students for writing drama in ministry settings.
Students will write and read their own material in class as
well as edit and critique the writing of their classmates.
DRAM 4011 Principles of Acting (3 credits)
A course designed to improve students' vocal
and physical delivery through dramatic presentations. The
course emphasizes character and scene analysis, blocking,
acting theory, and presentation. Students will present
various dramatic pieces as they learn the different areas of
acting.
DRAM 4022 Drama Workshop (3 credits)
This course is designed to take the different
areas of dramatic presentations (writing, acting, producing)
and develop a repertoire of pieces to be used in ministry.
Students will work together to write, produce and perform
different types of dramas.
General
Education Courses in The Arts
MUSC 2011
Music Appreciation (3 credits)
This course
will introduce the student to the elements of music (melody,
rhythm, harmony etc.) as the foundation for the development
of listening skills. Literature will draw from sacred and
secular art music representative of the various periods of
music history.
MUSC 2022
Fundamentals of Music (3 credits)
This introductory music theory
course provides students with the opportunity to learn to
read music and explore fundamental theoretical concepts.
Music reading skills are acquired through singing and
playing the recorder. Basic theoretical concepts, such as
meter signature, key signature, major and minor scales, and
triads are taught and experienced through in class
activities. This course provides a foundation for further
study in music and contributes to the understanding of music
in society and the church.
ARTT 1011 Art Appreciation (3 credits)
This course surveys the role the visual arts
have played in communication and the main divisions and
subdivisions used in the field of Art History. Emphasis will
be on the major changes that developed over the centuries.
The course will examine the historical, religious, and
cultural factors that have determined the direction the arts
have moved in through the centuries. Students will be
introduced to the wide variety of creative expression
employed by man and incorporates art vocabulary as needed.
ARTT 1022 Art Exploration (3 credits)
This is a hands-on lab course. It will
introduce students to a broad sampling of art media as a
means of communication: drawing, painting, collage, and
lettering. It will familiarize the students with the role of
the visual arts in today's society and allow them to explore
creative expression. It will also introduce ways for them to
apply what they have learned for practical use, whatever
their field of ministry. Vocabulary of the visual arts will
be studied as it pertains to the media and techniques
covered by the class.
