Kinds of
Library Resources
The Alice E. Chatlos Library
contains a number of different kinds of library sources.
However, you should view the library as having both physical
and virtual aspects. In the physical library, you can
access 91,000 volumes and 500 periodical titles and their
back issues. In the virtual library, you can use the
computer terminals (in the library or at home through the
library web page) to access a virtual library of books and
periodicals.
The
Alice E. Chatlos Library: Physical library resources
Let's talk about the
physical library first. In the library building, you will
find the following formats or mediums of information:
Books
Circulating: This means you can check them out. This is
majority of the collection.
Reference Books: These
do not circulate, but are used for reference purposes in
the library.
Young adult and
children's literature: These do not circulate out of the
library.
Videos
There are almost
1,300 video titles to choose from. We are just starting to
get into the DVD format, so we don't have many of them yet.
Cassettes
There are almost
6,000 cassette titles located on the top floor. These
represent sermons and seminars. They are best searched for
by subject or author in the library catalog.
Microfiche
There are over
9,000 microfiche titles, representing theses (master's
level) and dissertations (doctoral level) from students in
evangelical colleges and seminaries in the U.S. and Canada.
These do not circulate and are read using the microfiche
reader machine on the main floor.
Other
The library does
contain smaller collections in other formats, such as
flannelgraph, mission board files, flashcards,
transparencies, and curriculum kits.
Periodicals
The library
subscribes to approximately 500 titles. We also receive
about 120 mission board or college periodicals. These are
smaller and are located on the top floor. The librarian
indexes all of the journals for relevant articles. The
indexing for these are available through the library
computer catalog.
Virtual
Library Resources
Through the
library web page, you can enter a large, virtual library of
resources. Here is a simple breakdown of materials.
Books
Titles:
You can
search the Davis College library catalog, along with many
other electronic catalogs, including local libraries like
Binghamton University, Broome Community College, and the
Four County Library System. You can also use LibWeb to
access hundreds of library catalogs nation-wide according to
the state or kind of library. Looking at WorldCat or the
Library of Congress will give you a more comprehensive
search of titles.
Under
the 'Find Facts' section, you can search in encyclopedias,
dictionaries, and other reference tools.
Full-text:
The 'E
books' link will take you to a few links where you can read
the full text of books that are free in copyright.
Periodicals
On the
'Searching' page of the library web site, you can search for
full text articles through the FirstSearch and
EbscoHost databases. The
FirstSearch
database contains
over 4,000 electronic journals and articles from 9,000
full-text journals. EbscoHost has over 1,200
full-text journals, and over 3,000 scholarly journals
indexed and abstracted.
The On-line
Journals link will take you to the Directory of Open Access
Journals that contains over 1,600 journal titles, many with
full-text retrieval.
Internet Sources
Using the search
engines like Google, you can retrieve articles and writings
on your subject. Using Google Scholar, you can make your
search for authoritative sources easier and shorter.
Conclusion
The library contains access
to both physical and virtual libraries. Learning how to
search, find, evaluate, and use those sources is a skill
that you will develop even more while in college. There are
some helpful links in this regard in the Instruction and
Tutorials. |
