JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Host Trinity Baptist College defeated the defending champion Davis College men, 77-70, in the Small Bible College National Invitational Tournament championship on Saturday.
Davis defeated Trinity in 2011 in double overtime.
The Falcons (16-13) trailed 21-6 with 11:50 left in the first half but closed to within 33-27 by halftime. In the final two minutes, Colton Lewis scored on a put-back dunk and Dexter Terry and Jeff Joseph each made a layup. Struggling to connect offensively, the Falcons were 0-for-12 from three-point range and 2-for-8 from the foul line.
Tournament MVP Corey Roth, who finished with 38 points and 10 rebounds, got Trinity rolling in the second half, but Davis found its rhythm and closed a 16-point deficit to four, 66-62, with two minutes remaining. A three-point play by Trinity halted that run, however, and Davis couldn't come any closer.
Davis' Antonio Goodridge was named to the all-tournament team. He collected 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block.
Joseph finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Dexter Terry added 11 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, and Colton Lewis scored 13 points.
"I was definitely proud of my guys making that run at the end," said Davis coach Dan Rathmell. "They could have given up ... but we were able to fight back. It was still a very successful season winning our conference again and coming up runner-up in the bible college nationals."

The Davis College men's basketball team defeated visiting Christendom College on Saturday 70-57 in a Shenandoah & Chesapeake Conference match-up. The Falcons overcame a poor shooting night (35% fg, 27% from 3pt) with a tremendous defensive effort and capitalized from the free throw line to come up with the win.

Senior Jeff Joseph had a full stat line with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, a block, and took 2 charges. Sophomore Dexter Terry recorded his 7 double double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with 3 blocked shots.
In the first half, Christendom held a 20-14 lead with around 6 minutes to go before Davis’ offense finally started clicking. Antonio Goodridge and Joseph both had 8 first half points to keep the game close. Free throw shooting was a big concern in the first 20 minutes as the Falcons converted just 9-18 from the line. However in the second half, Davis players stepped up and made 13-15 free throws to close out the visitors.
The win puts Davis (11-9) at 5-1 in the conference and for the first time this season they have won 3 games in a row. Coach Rathmell attributes the recent success to the increased commitment on the defensive end as the team has only given up an average of 53.6 ppg during the streak.
